WORKSHOPS
CAIRN - Seeing is work
From March 14 to 20, 2021, Le Frasnois
As part of a university project, directed by Pierre Baumann, professor of artistic practice at Bordeaux Montaigne.
Things in nature are volatile, ephemeral. The aim of the research here is to show the beauty of the simple forms of nature, while showing this ephemeral aspect.
To do this, you must first demonstrate observation, contemplation and even admiration of the forest landscape of Frasnois. Observation is the key to this work. We need to know how to analyze the place we are in to be able to better understand it. After observing, seeing, there is work. The harvest is therefore essential to build this project. Collecting raw materials from the ground as often as possible allows you to have as little impact as possible on the environment. Dead leaves, dry grass, twigs, stones, water, all these natural elements allow us to carry out, first of all, experimental tests. These tests are sketches, casts, small sculptures made on site or indoors. Creating an installation in the same place allows us to question these lines of research. But these installations are not sustainable.
How to work on the question of seeing using nature as the main material? How can we work in the landscape with as little impact as possible, while still drawing the viewer's attention to an anomaly at the bend of a path? How can we return this work?
The use of beeswax, a natural material from agriculture, allows for the conservation of shapes gleaned from nature. This makes it possible to preserve an ephemeral form, destined to disappear, thanks to molding. In addition, photography and drawing are also there to document external production, showing the creations from a certain point of view.
